This video of the world’s coolest math class is going viral — and we can see why

A video of someone doing a math problem sounds about as interesting as watching paint dry, or reading an in-depth history of grain production in Western Canada. But a video posted on Thursday night by Twitter user Jus Smith proves us wrong.

In the video, which has over 49,000 likes and 35,000 retweets, a young girl in math class shows off her impressive dance moves as well as her awesome math skills.

While she breaks it down at the front of the class, we hear her classmates rap: “Bring it on down there, bring it on back; divide, multiply and subtract.”

The class is taught by Nadine S. Ebri at La Core Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida. When the student turns to solve the long division problem on the board, her classmates shout out each step – Divide! Multiply! Subtract! – as she does it.

(Honestly, for those of us who haven’t done long division in a while, this was a valuable refresher.)

As fun as the video is, it also underscores the importance of incorporating interactive teaching methods in the classroom, and making learning fun for kids.

As neurologist and educator Judy Willis wrote in her book, Research-based strategies to Ignite Student Learning: Insights from a Neurologist and Classroom Teacher:

“The highest-level executive thinking, making of connections, and “aha moments are more likely to occur in an atmosphere of “exuberant discovery, where students of all ages retain that kindergarten enthusiasm of embracing each day with the joy of learning.

So incorporating fun into the classroom doesn’t just turn your kids into YouTube stars, it helps them learn! And we’re so on board with that.
