When you are overwhelmed by what you see on the news, this video will remind you of the good in the world

It’s hard to stay positive these days. Injustice and inequality is by no means a new concept, but following the 2016 Presidential election, the possibility for progress feels slim. But it is that very mindset that will harm our work for civil rights, gender equality, environmental protections, and more. When we ignore our victories — no matter how big or small — it’s easy to burn out and stop organizing. It is more important than ever that we use good news as our fuel to fight.

And that’s what this new video by Ocean Park Standoff reminds us to do. Yesterday, the alt-pop band composed of Samantha Ronson, Pete Nappi, and Ethan Thompson released a video titled “It’s The Highs And It’s The Lows We Remember.” Set to their piano-driven track, “Good News”(I need some good news, baby / ‘Cause all the world’s gone crazy), a compilation of news footage begins.

Following short clips of #BlackLivesMatter activists and Brexit news coverage, we see the message:

"2016 was a challenging year. 2017 will undoubtedly have new challenges. But we find light in the darkness when we come together."

Next, Ocean Park Standoff reminds us of the incredible things that have happened over the past year — things we may have forgotten since we are so overwhelmed by the frightening events we also see on the news.

For starters, we have a record number of women of color serving in Congress, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality, and the Women’s March following Trump’s inauguration was historically massive.

In addition to political victories, the video mentions environmental accomplishments — like India planting 50 million trees in one day. There are pop cultural milestones to help us maintain our spirits as well, like Madeline Stuart becoming the second model with Down Syndrome to ever walk at New York Fashion Week.
