This video explains how Kim Kardashian’s $300 flip-flops becomes the top trending thing on Facebook
Take any article about Kim Kardashian on Facebook, and you can see comment after comment saying, “Who cares?” and “Stop making stupid people famous!” It’s pretty ironic, actually, because by commenting on that article saying that you don’t care, you’re actually boosting engagement. . . and making Kim Kardashian a trending topic on Facebook.
The Verge recently created a precise, minute-long video that explains exactly how a topic trends on Facebook . . . and how some things that many deem unworthy to be there get so darn popular. The trending section shows 10 of the most popular topics related to general trends, politics, science and technology, sports, and entertainment, and sometimes, we’ll see topics about a celebrity’s dress ranked higher than topics about a world disaster.
Although the company claims that the topics you see trending are “based on a number of factors including engagement, timeliness, pages you’ve liked, and your location,” as well as what’s currently trending through Facebook. But, as The Verge notes in its video, the way Facebook decides what’s trending is “based on a collection of data collected by its millions of users.” In other words, when you click, comment, share, or like an article, you are making it more popular. Although there were certainly some people who genuinely cared about Kim Kardashian’s $300 flip-flops back in November, the majority of people simply clicked out of curiosity while thinking exactly what so many people are commenting. . . “Who cares?”
In other words, we all have the power to change what we see on the Internet, and we all have the power to change trending topics. If you see something you genuinely don’t care about, don’t comment “I don’t care.” Just keep on scrolling.
