Verne Troyer, a.k.a. Mini-Me in Austin Powers, has sadly passed away at the age of 49

We’re sad to report that actor Verne Troyer, most known for playing Mini-Me in the Austin Powers films, has died at the age of 49. His family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement, which they shared across his social media accounts on Saturday, April 21st.

“It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today,” they wrote. “Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh. Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible. Verne hoped he made a positive change with the platform he had and worked towards spreading that message every day. He inspired people around the world with his drive, determination, and attitude.”

Troyer was born with the genetic disorder known as achondroplasia dwarfism. He was open about the fact that his parents never treated him any differently than his other siblings. He was 2’8” and they were average height.

Troyer had been in the hospital for a few weeks.

On April 3rd, TMZ reported that Troyer was taken to the hospital after the police received a report that he was drunk and suicidal. His family confirmed his hospitalization on his Instagram account.

Troyer struggled with alcoholism in the past and had a few stints in rehab.

"Verne was also a fighter when it came to his own battles. Over the years he’s struggled and won, struggled and won, struggled and fought some more, but unfortunately this time was too much," his family's statement continued. "Depression and Suicide are very serious issues. You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another. And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help."

Troyer’s family is asking that friends, family, and fans honor his memory by making donations to his two favorite charities: The Starkey Hearing Foundation and Best Buddies.

May he rest in peace.
