We’re swooning over this gorgeous Velvet Underground cover

There are few songs as instantly evocative as the Velvet Underground and Nico’s “Sunday Morning:”

It’s a song that sounds both sleepy and incredibly soothing, like a long drink of tea for your ears. That opening celeste line (that music box-y sound) is one of the few musical things in the world that truly deserves the title “iconic.”

But now, musicians Flo Morrissey and Matthew E. White have reworked the song into a spangly, upbeat rock jam. And despite how that sounds, it actually works.

While the original song lulls itself along, Morrissey and White’s take mixes in Beach Boys-adjacent touches. (Especially that repeating male vocal line.) I’ve been following Morrissey’s music since I first heard her song “If You Can`t Love This All Goes Away,” and she does justice to Nico’s original vocal delivery. (Even though they sing, like, two octaves apart.)

Morrissey and White recorded “Sunday Morning” for their Gentlewoman, Ruby Man covers project. The album, which drops on Jan. 13, also contains a cover of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You,” which sounds incredible. Alas, that’s not one of the tracks already available to stream; but this pretty great cover of “Grease” is:
