Velvet is no longer underground: celebs are already rocking fall’s favorite fabric

As the hot days of summer start to come to an end, celebs are breaking into the next big looks for fall. And for 2016, according to Hollywood Reporter, there’s no bigger must-have fabric this fall than velvet. We know, we haven’t seen a lot of the soft, slightly shimmery fabric since the ’90s, but this fall it’s coming back with a vengeance, and celebs are already rocking it all over the red carpet.

The velvet gives the harsh, structured top of this gown a softer edge that we love with Gaga’s soft updo and classic makeup.

Lizzie Caplan also rocked this fab gown with velevet blocks to the TCA Summer Press tour.

We love the mixed-media look of this color and fabric-blocked dress. The mixed fabrics and calf length keep the dress fun and not too heavy.

The velvet fabric gives the girly cut of this adorable dress a little more sophisticated style. We also love the graphic floral print, which contrasts nicely with the dark velvet fabric.

The velvet bodice gives a nice texture contrast to the floaty fabric of the sleeves.

Velvet isn’t just a fabric for dresses. Just look at Tilda Swinton’s bold suit from the Marvel Comic-Con panel.

The forest green gets a fancy, evening vibe from the velvet fabric, but we love the casual drape of the suit as well.

Emma Roberts rocked a daring neckline in burgundy velvet at the MTV Fandom Awards.

The velvet softens the severe, sexy cut of the neckline, and we love how the skirt drapes softly around the center seam.

We love how velvet can make even the most daring colors work, as with this electric orange on model Nicole Atieno.

In another fabric, this bright tangerine might be too much for a full bodysuit, but because the soft velvet reflects light differently, it softens a harsh color and makes it look impossibly chic.
