Turns out “The Vampire Diaries” was originally supposed to end completely differently
Even though The Vampire Diaries series is long over, news about the show continues to leak out. This week, the show’s stars and its fans are celebrating the 10 year anniversary, but let us not forget that the epic show was originally supposed to end completely differently! Although this may seem like a fever dream, we’re here to assure you that it’s very much true.
The creators of The Vampire Diaries, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, told Entertainment Weekly that they had an ending in mind back around season two. The show was just gaining a following at the time. The two writers mulled over a fitting series ending at a food court. And you won’t believe what they came up with…
WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW.
As a quick refresher…
The real series finale showed Stefan sacrificing himself to save the lives of everyone on the show. Damon and Elena enjoy a life together as humans. After they die, Elena is reunited with her family, and Damon finally hugs Stefan.

Obviously, this ending is a tearjerker. But it turns out that the episode was originally supposed to end completely differently. According to Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson:
"When all is said and done, when this show is over, both brothers should die in the name of saving their girl and then be watching her like ghosts — because we had introduced the Other Side — as she went off into the sunset to live her life and maybe marry Matt Donovan or maybe become a doctor, but that those brothers would be side-by-side watching her live. That was the thing that made us cry all the tears in season 2.
Both of the brothers die?! No one gets to be with Elena?
But what about Delena and all of the people who ship them together?!
"If Nina had never left, I would’ve loved to have been able to see if Stefan and Elena could’ve found their way back to each other. I don’t know if they could have, but had that departure not been a part of it, the long game would’ve been to see if we could bring the love triangle back around before the series ended and really leave a choice. But her departure sealed the romantic contract between Damon and Elena. In that moment, to me, the show ceased to be about a love triangle and became a show about the power of these brothers and their love for each other. And so there was no way in hell I was killing both of them and leaving neither of them with the happy ending. It just was never going to happen.
Well, there you have it! While the show is now history, fan fiction is just a click away. You can even write your own ending.
