You can now use Uber for helicopters because why not?
If you thought ordering a car at the touch of a button was evidence that we are living in the future, then wait until you hear about Uber’s newest plan: ordering helicopters. The Wall Street Journal reports that the ride-sharing app is teaming up with Airbus Group to pilot a new helicopter-ordering feature at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.
Airbus will supply Uber with H125 and H130 helicopters for their UberChopper program, which has been tested before three years ago in New York, and over this past summer at the Cannes Film Festival and the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. However, you definitely don’t want to encounter surge pricing for these rides, since they’re reported to cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars as is.
Clearly, this is something the company is still figuring out. As nice as hailing a helicopter to go to the grocery store sounds in theory, there are definitely a lot of logistics to work through before the feature is rolled out to the entire public. However, it’s well on its way.
“It’s a pilot project,” Airbus chief executive Tom Enders explained. “We’ll see where it goes — but it’s pretty exciting.”
We couldn’t agree more.
