Urban Outfitters is now a pizza restaurant?
Urban Outfitters has made a lot of questionable moves in the past year. And now, they’ve got us scratching our heads again—but not because of any controversy. Rather, this has to do with something near and dear to our hearts: PIZZA.
As of this week, UO has gone ahead and bought an Italian restaurant chain.
Bloomberg reports that the Philadelphia-based retail company has officially bought the Ventri Family group of restaurants—which is responsible for one of the best pizza restaurants in the country, according to Food and Wine.
While they haven’t confirmed whether pizza will become a part of the shopping experience in all of the chain’s stores, that’s exactly what people are speculating.
“Spending on casual dining is expanding rapidly, and thus, we believe there is tremendous opportunity to expand the Pizzeria Vetri concept,” Richard A. Hayne, CEO of Urban Outfitters, said in a release.
Now, those who frequent Urban Outfitters know that the company does have some cafes in its larger stores, and it has three locations called “Urban Outfitters’ Spaces” around the country that combine retail, food, music, art, and events all in one place.
But buying an entire pizza chain? That’s some dedication to eating-while-shopping. The thought process is “to use Urban Outfitters to help the restaurants expand while Vetri Family focuses on the food,” according to Bloomberg. This way, the two can help each other out (in a very unconventional way).
Hey people love their pizza, we’re not going to deny that. And maybe cheesy goodness will be a little more incentive to shop offline and in the store. Just a thought.
