“Once Upon a Time” just officially introduced its first LGBT couple
Last night was a big night for Once Upon a Time. The ABC show is in its sixth season, and finally introduced a confirmed same-sex relationship in an episode titled “Ruby Slippers.” And we are totally here for it.
The blossoming relationship is between Ruby (Meghan Ory) and Dorothy (Teri Reeves). Ruby meets Dorothy after Zelena (Rebecca Mader) snatches Dorothy’s dog Toto. The two bond, and Ruby is drawn to her instantly. She asks Mulan (Jamie Chung) for advice on what to do about her feelings.
“I know we just met, but I have never felt like this about anyone before,” Ruby says.
“Don’t make the same mistake that I did,” Mulan replies. “Don’t wait until it’s too late to tell someone how you feel.”
Ruby sets out to find Dorothy and tell her how she feels. She ventures into the Underworld, where she finds Dorothy under a sleeping curse. Ruby gives her true love’s kiss and voila! She wakes up. Now, all that’s left to do is live happily ever after.
“True love’s kiss has been a staple of this show since the beginning,” the show’s co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis said about the LGBT storyline. “This past Sunday’s episode was just another example of how in a fairy tale, as in life, love is love.”
It’s a fairytale ending for a fairytale show. A love story is a love story, no matter who the characters are. We can’t wait to watch the excitement unfold between Ruby and Dorothy!
