We’re Psyched These YA Books Are Getting Turned Into Movies

With the success of YA book-to-movie adaptations like The Hunger Games and Divergent, and the sure to be popular The Fault in Our Stars, the genre is more ripe for cinematic makeovers than ever. So naturally Hollywood is sending dozens of projects down the pipeline to cash in on the trend. Some books are in the early stages of adaption. Others are coming to theaters near us all very soon. Here are 5 YA books-turned-movies to look forward to.

The Giver by Lois Lowry

Satiate your YA and children’s literature movie appetite with The Giver, coming to theaters August 15.  The beloved book tells the story of Jonas, who lives a life of conformity and contentment until he’s given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory. As the secrets of his society start unraveling, things, as you can imagine, get interesting. Starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift, and Brenton Thwaites.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

The first in a trilogy, the series opens with The Maze Runner. The story is about a boy who wakes up trapped in the center of a maze with a group of other boys, all of whom have no idea how they got there. The boy must piece together slivers of memories and dreams to figure out why they’re there and how they’re supposed to get out. And just wait until the day a girl enters the maze. Troubles and drama abound! This is another one we don’t have to wait forever for — it’s in theaters September 19th and stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Will Poulter.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

If I Stay, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, tells the tale of Mia, a young woman who believed the hardest decision she’d have to make was whether to go to Julliard or to be with the love of her life. All that changes after Mia and her family are in a horrible car accident that sends her into a coma. From there she’s caught between life and death, watching family and friends coming to visit her in the hospital and delving into her own memories. As the concept of a harsh reality without her family sets in, will she ultimately decide to stay and fight for her own life or to let it all just slip away and die? Heavy stuff, doc.

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

If you somehow missed the book, the story is about a teenage girl who is forced to figure out how to survive on her own after aliens invade the planet, decimate the population, and render technology useless. Tobey Maguire is on the team producing, and the screenwriter of Erin Brokovich is also attached to the film. In April, Chloe Grace Moretz was named to play the heroine, Cassie. Get excited!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by JK Rowling

In case you live under a rock and aren’t a huge Harry Potter fan rabid for any new developments from JK Rowling, you may have missed the fact that this Harry Potter-related book is getting turned into a film. This book was part of the Harry Potter universe and thank heavens it’s getting turned into not just one, but three movies, with at least the first script penned by JK herself. It’s to take place in 1920s New York and focus on the fictional author of a fictional book. It’s coming November 2016 so basically start lining up now.

Of course, nothing is set in stone in Hollywood, but color me excited for what’s (hopefully and/or definitely) to come!
