Uber’s latest diversity report shows things have gotten slightly better for women, but it’s not all good news
Considering that it’s now 2018, you’d think that inclusivity wouldn’t be an issue in the corporate world anymore (LOL, in our dreams). But unfortunately, a lack of diversity remains a huge problem for many companies, including Uber. On Tuesday, April 24th, Uber released its second annual diversity report, which shows how the company is improving, but also where it’s not. While it does seem like some progress is happening, there’s still such a long way to go.
In the report, the first under the company’s new CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber took stock of employees’ ethnicities and genders and found that its workforce is 48.6% white and 62% male — which is an improvement from where Uber used to be.
In the past year, Uber’s female population has grown by just under 2%, which is progress, and there are now more Latinx people at the company as well.
But still, there are no black or brown people in tech roles, which is more than troubling, and the black population at Uber slightly decreased since the company’s last diversity report.

It’s also important to note that Uber didn’t get total participation in this survey; some of the information was taken from HR software Workday, and just over a third of Uber’s worldwide employees provided data needed for this report. While this is definitely a sample size that could be representative of what the company’s workforce looks like as a whole, it’s not a measure of every single person who works there.
The good news? Uber is actively trying to become a more inclusive company.
"In Q2, we will launch new leadership programs for underrepresented groups and for women, we are doubling down on our support for employee resource groups, and we are continuing our diversity and inclusion and allyship workshops," the company wrote in its report.
Good for Uber for standing up for what’s right, but hopefully, its leaders are also recognizing how much progress still needs to be made.
