The U.S. divorce rate is the lowest it has been in 40 years!

New data shows that the U.S. divorce rate is lower than it’s been in nearly 40 years.

The National Center for Family and Marriage Research released the study Thursday, claiming the divorce rate dropped for the third year in a row, reaching its lowest point since the mid-1970’s.

In 2015, 16.9 out of 1,000 married women got divorced. That’s down from 17.6 in 2014, and a peak of 23 divorces in 1980.

Meanwhile, marriage rates have been dropping for decades, but are on their way back up for the first time since 2010. For every 1,000 unmarried women in 2015, 32.2 got married, which is up from 31.9 in 2014.

Basically, more people are getting married and staying married than they have in a long time.

The two statistics aren’t necessarily related, experts say. However, the data suggests that millennials (who generally cohabitate more before marriage and wait longer to tie the knot) are on track for longer, stronger marriages than the previous generation.
