Tyra Banks just showed us how a no-makeup selfie is done

Tyra Banks, the women who invented the term “flawsome,” or being awesome for your flaws, has made another statement about natural beauty.

Tyra’s given us another awesome dose of body positivity rooted in reality with her most recent no-makeup selfie. We know, we know—the urge to eyeroll at the phrase “no-makeup selfie” is REAL. But this is seriously legit: a pic of Tyra with no makeup whatsoever, no filter whatsoever, and a silly face. And we love it.

“You know how people say #nofilter but you know there’s a freakin’ filter on their pic?” she wrote on her Instagram. “Or maybe there’s a smidge of retouching going on but they’re lying and saying it’s all raw & real? Well, this morn, I decided to give you a taste of the really real me.”

Tyra said the urge to put on at least a little makeup was strong, but she decided against it. She wanted to show what her face looks like completely stripped bare. “I wanted to smooth out my dark circles so badly,” she wrote. “But I was like, ‘Naw, Ty. Show ’em the REAL you.’ So. . . here I am. Raw.”

While Banks isn’t by any means the first person to post a no-makeup selfie—there’s a robust social media movement surrounding the empowerment of natural beauty—she makes a smart point. With the pressures of filtered and retouched beauty standards, even some makeup-free selfies aren’t always so unfiltered. So it’s refreshing to see a supermodel get super real and show the world what “waking up” really looks like.  And even if she’s not done up, we still think she looks great.

But Tyra doesn’t care what people think. That’s the point.

“. . . there YOU are. . . looking at me, studying this picture,” she wrote. “Maybe you’re thinking, ‘Whoa, she looks ROUGH.’ And if you are, great! You deserve to see the REAL me. The REALLY real me.” Tyra capped off the photo with the hashtag #RawAndReal.

We totally love Tyra’s honesty here. She is, indeed, raw and real—and it’s always amazing when celebs are willing to show what they look like underneath the makeup and Photoshop so that we can see that body and beauty ideals today are seriously unrealistic. Thanks, Tyra, for a dose of flawsome reality.
