Two dogs hugged and their lives were saved because of it
For two dogs in Atlanta, Georgia, one hug saved their lives when a picture of their sweet moment went viral. Kala and Keira, who shared a kennel at an area shelter, were just hours away from being put down when Angels Among Us Pet Rescue shared their story on Facebook. And in a viral miracle, someone was more than happy to give both dogs a loving home.
Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, a non-profit that works to find homes for animals slated to be euthanized at Atlanta-area shelters, posted the picture of the dogs on Monday. The image is striking, with Kala’s arms wrapped around Keira’s neck. Both of them look so serious, and it definitely tugs at your heartstrings knowing how close they were to being put down.
“Oh my gosh!!! We see a lot of things in rescue but this absolutely will reduce you to tears!” the original plea for help posted along with the photo read. “Kala and Keira are in a shelter and are scheduled to be put to sleep. Today is their last day unless we can save them. This is as urgent as urgent can get. We really don’t have time to spare. We have no fosters available. Animals in need have overwhelmed us recently and we must have someone today apply to foster.”
The post was shared thousands of times, and has been liked over 700,000 times since being posted. And all that activity paid off. Fortunately, within a few hours they had some very happy news to share with their followers.
“Exactly 2 hours and 6 minutes. That’s how long it took this amazing community of animals lovers to come together to save the lives of two canine friends. We just received word from our Angels volunteer that Kala and Keira are safely in the car and on their way to a vet -All thanks to you.”
The two dogs were rescued from the shelter and fostered by an unnamed volunteer, but they’re still looking for a more permanent home.
With the second photo, the organization also shared the following message:
“It is so important that we encourage others to spay and neuter and understand that pets are a lifetime commitment. It is so easy to say, why won’t the shelter do something but they are the ones reaching out to us begging for help. In a perfect world they would be empty as every animal should be loved and in a home. We appreciate the shelter getting this picture to us and allowing us to share it with our followers! We can do amazing things when we all work together!”
We’re so glad this story has a happy ending, and are so glad the shelter and Angels Among Us Pet Rescue were able to work together to make it happen!
