How this Tweet about headphones makes an important point about sexual harassment

The life of a woman on the internet is an exhausting one. Whether trolls send you rape threats or slut-shaming comments, sexist and misogynistic folks will hide behind a keyboard and jump at any opportunity for harassment.

Now, the ever present victim-blaming mentality often results in people thinking that women can somehow “avoid” this kind of cyber harassment, if only they behaved differently online — if only they weren’t “asking for it.” But Twitter user @catttttt___ just smashed that fallacy to pieces.

It all started when Cat posted a photo of her new headphones on Snapchat.

A photo of an inanimate object — Cat’s face and body are nowhere to be seen.

Then, she received this message:

“You wearing those, and nothing else, that would be heaven.”

SERIOUSLY.

Cat then put these screenshots together with a sarcastic Tweet, and delivered the ultimate takedown of the “asking for it” argument that just won’t die — no matter how many times it is proven to be complete garbage.

I DARE ANYBODY TO CHALLENGE THIS FLAWLESS ARGUMENT (which has also been retweeted over 34,000 times and liked over 60,000 times — so far.)

If a woman can’t post a picture of HEADPHONES without receiving sexual harassment, then how can she be expected to have any ability to avoid sexist commenters? Hmmm??

Thank you, Cat, for so succinctly explaining that rampant online sexism and misogyny is not the woman’s fault, while still managing to make us laugh.
