Trump said it “doesn’t matter” that he mocked Christine Blasey Ford—and that’s disgusting

On October 2nd, President Trump gave a speech in which he mocked the Senate testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. While the crowd laughed and cheered, Trump attacked Ford’s account of the alleged sexual assault perpetrated by then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. And Trump recently said his offensive and tasteless comments “don’t matter,” because “we won” (referring to Kavanaugh’s eventual confirmation).

"Had I not made that speech, we would not have won," Trump said during an interview with 60 Minutes' Lesley Stahl that aired Sunday, October 14th. When Stahl pressed him on his problematic behavior at the rally, he said, "I didn't really make fun of her. I said the person that we're talking about didn't know the year, the time, the place."

Trump continued to imply that Kavanaugh suffered much worse than Ford did during the hearing, and he insisted that he personally treated Ford with the utmost respect.

“You seem to be saying that she lied,” Stahl said, regarding Trump’s attitude toward Ford.

“You know what? I’m not going to get into it,” Trump retorted, “because we won. It doesn’t matter. We won.”

However, what Trump says does matter. He’s our president—the most important representative of our entire country. By insisting that mocking a victim of sexual assault doesn’t mean anything, he’s showing his followers that they, too, can mock women and dismiss their experiences. He also seems to be implying that the ends justify the means—a dangerous and scary line of thinking for any leader. false

Winning is clearly much more important to President Trump than building a stronger, more inclusive and loving community—and at the end of the day, that’s both sad and disheartening.
