Disney might finally be making a sequel to “Tron: Legacy,” but with a new superstar lead

Real talk, I loved Tron: Legacy. The movie, which came out in 2010, was just campy enough to be amazing. The costumes were dope. The music was ridiculous. (Shouts to Daft Punk for putting together an instantly iconic score.) Jeff Bridges was excellently Jeff Bridges-y. Heck, it’s also the inspiration for the best Disney Park ride ever?!

Now, Disney is maybe moving ahead on a sequel for the film, and they’ve got an interesting leading man in mind: Jared Leto.

The plans for a Tron: Legacy sequel were actually already in place years ago. The studio formally shelved the script for the third film in the series in 2015. In the script for Tron 3, Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn and Olivia Wilde’s Quorra were again the leads. But as so much time’s gone by between the two films, it seems studio execs are looking for a casting shake-up.

Enter: Leto, fresh off his cackling turn as the Joker in Suicide Squad. The choice is certainly, um, interesting. This isn’t to doubt Leto’s ability to turn in a performance, but rather a question about the story’s new direction. Regardless, we can play ball here as long as certain other things remain intact. Jeff Bridges, obviously. Probably some updates regarding the even more pervasive role of technology in our lives. And most, most importantly, get those French robots back in the game. (Pun absolutely intended.)
