Tricks of the Trade: The Illusion of Bigger Eyes!

This week, I will be sharing two simple, very subtle yet extremely effective tricks. Often people ask me how they can make their eyes look bigger and wider without using lots of make-up, so here I have two simple techniques in order for you to achieve that fresh, wide eyed look!

1. Tightlining

Tightlining is the technique of adding eyeliner or eyeshadow to the upper waterline of the eye. It makes your lashes look so much fuller, without looking like you’re wearing any eyeliner at all. If you do like to wear liquid eyeliner, tight lining your eye makes the line look fuller and more complete too. If you search Google images for ‘tightlining’, you can see lots of great before & afters!

You can see the subtle difference that after tightlining the lash line looks slightly fuller and thicker. I wouldn’t recommend using gel or liquid eyeliner for this, I suggest using either a kohl pencil eyeliner in black or dark brown, or an angled brush with a dark eyeshadow.

2. Black or White Eyeliner

Another way to achieve that wide eyed look, is to replace your black eyeliner pencil with a white one! Using a black pencil on your waterline can make your eyes look smaller, however using a white eyeliner pencil on your waterline can really make your eyes look bigger. This is because it gives the illusion of the whites of your eyes being physically bigger. Another tip is to add a soft brown eyeliner just under the lash line, which again gives the illusion of bigger eyes.

There will be more trade secrets in the following weeks and I will be focusing on more tips for wider eyes, lots of eyeshadow and eyeliner tricks and lessons on how to effectively highlight and contour your face. So stay tuned!
