So, Travis Scott agreed to perform at the Super Bowl under one critical condition
In December 2018, Travis Scott confirmed he would be making a guest appearance at the Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show. He and Big Boi will join Maroon 5 during the February 3rd game, which will take place at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But before he signed on to perform, Scott had one request of the NFL. The rapper agreed to take the stage only if the NFL joined him in donating to a social justice organization.
According to Billboard, Scott and the NFL donated $500,000 to Dream Corps, an organization founded in 2014 by Van Jones that supports multiple economic, environmental, and criminal justice innovators. The org’s slogan is “21st-century jobs, not jails.”
"I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in," Scott said in a January 13th statement per Billboard. "I know being an artist that it’s in my power to inspire. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation. I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change."
Rihanna, Jay-Z, and Cardi B all reportedly turned down offers to perform, objecting to the NFL’s stance on the Take A Knee movement. Michael B. Jordan, Reverend Al Sharpton, and others publicly disapproved of Scott’s decision to play the Halftime Show for this same reason.
