Today in beautiful: This trans teen was just named homecoming queen at her high school
One of the most enduring high school fairytales is that of the homecoming king and queen: The perfect mix of nostalgia, cool fall weather, football, and high school royalty politics. However, within this old school tradition, there’s still room for progress, which is why we’re applauding Landon Patterson’s homecoming queen win.
Patterson, a trans teen attending Northland High School in Kansas City, had dreamed about becoming homecoming queen as a freshman. “I’ve dreamed about it since my freshman year, but I never knew it was possible for me,” she shared with a local news station, “Just knowing that I did this, and that I just broke some barriers, I can’t even put it into words what I’m feeling right now. I’m just excited and hope this is going to help others out there.”
Patterson looked every part the teen queen in a beautiful gown, and shared her victory with the classmates who’d nominated her. For her, “I’m hoping it’s helping other people in my situation because that’s my goal” — and we’re sure she is.
