There’s a trailer for “The Emoji Movie” and here’s what we know

After almost a year of teasing, the trailer for The Emoji Movie is here and we’re not quite sure what to make of it all.

It was announced last year that Sony Pictures had won a bidding war for the rights to make a movie out everyone’s favorite non-verbal tools of correspondence. It was then revealed that comedian T.J. Miller had been cast in the movie earlier this year.

Now, while the recent upgrades to the emoji world have left us feeling a bit terrified (seriously, have you SEEN the creepy clown!?), we’re pretty sure that Sony wouldn’t allow such scary things into an animated movie that’s bound to be aimed at young people.

However, now we’ve seen a trailer for the film and we’re pretty sure that our fears won’t be realized (THANK GOODNESS).

The clip doesn’t give too much away about the plot for the film. However, we do get to see the hilarious characteristics of our favorite emojis and we’re kinda loving it!

According to Entertainment Weekly, the plot of the film will follow Gene (played by T.J. Miller), an emoji who has too many expressions. Set in the world of Textopolis, Gene’s characteristics don’t quite fit in with the rigid mindset that emojis can only have one function.

Gene’s problems make him a “malfunction,” and so he sets out on an adventure across the world of the mobile phone with two companions, Hi-5 (James Corden) and Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer), both of whom also have their own things to sort out, too.

“When you’re trying to make an animated movie, the best thing is to find that familiar thing everyone’s familiar with but no one really thinks about in this way,” director Tony Leondis said to Entertainment Weekly. “From my niece to my grandmother, they send emojis. It connects us. In this technological world, we still find ways to connect as human beings, and I think that’s what emojis do.”

According to Sony Pictures, the movie will feature a host of apps that we’re all familiar with, including Candy Crush Saga, Dropbox, Instagram, Spotify, Twitter, and YouTube.

We’re pretty sure, then, that the “mobile phone landscape” will include Gene roaming through all these different apps to try and find his place in the world.

Tbh, we love a self-discovery movie (even if it is about emojis). It’s what made the whole of The Lego Movie so darn enjoyable, so we’re pretty sure that we’ll LOVE this when it comes out.

The Emoji Movie is set for release August 4th 2017.
