This iconic store from our childhoods is closing a ton of locations
Fans of nostalgia, brace yourselves: An iconic store direct from your childhood may be on its way out. Toys “R” Us is shutting down a ton of locations across the country. Needless to say, this doesn’t bode well for the mega-chain — or for some of our fondest childhood memories.
On Tuesday, January 23rd, Toys “R” Us officially announced it will be closing about one-fifth of its locations. This adds up to about 180 stores across the country. The closures will run from early February through the middle of April 2018. It’s all part of the iconic store’s efforts to emerge from a massive bankruptcy and resume its position as the ultimate stop for toys and games.
It’s been a hard road for Toys “R” Us in recent years. Online retailers like Amazon have made a massive dent in its earnings, and the brick and mortar locations haven’t been able to make up the difference. Now the company is trying to revamp its image and business plan in an effort to come back stronger than ever.

In addition to the numerous store closings, Toys “R” Us will be offering discounts to shoppers, and the store will also provide customers with a new and improved loyalty program in an effort to encourage repeat business. All these moves are aimed at helping the company emerge from bankruptcy as quickly and painlessly as possible.

We’re sad to see Toys “R” Us closing so many of its stores — especially because it means the inevitable job loss for many people. We hope the retailer gets back on its feet, and soon.
