Toy Story 4 will be a rom-com—and one of our fave actresses is writing it
Not sure how to feel about the latest news out of Andy’s toy chest: Toy Story 4 is going to be a rom-com. According to Pixar President Jim Morris, the fourth installment of the hugely popular franchise isn’t going to be a continuation of the story we’ve all come to know and love. That just might mean no Buzz or Woody—but details are still being hammered out. The comments were made in a recent interview with Spanish language site Disney Latino. The movie, which is expected to be released in June 2017, will be a one-off story with few human-toy interactions.
“”It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3. Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children,” Morris said in the interview. “I think it will be a very good movie.”
So what will the movie look like? At this point, it’s pretty unclear, aside from the love angle and the fact that Woody and Andy’s relationship probably won’t play a major part. Pixar has done a great job with imaginative and touching love stories in the past (I’m looking at you, Wall-E), and it is exciting to ponder what they might come up with for Toy Story 4. Another reason to be excited: Rashida Jones is co-writing the script! Morris told Disney Latino director John Lasseter wanted to bring strong female voices into the writer’s room, and Jones is such a great choice!
Fans weren’t thrilled when Toy Story 4 was announced last year, which makes sense. Hollywood has a history of taking great films just a step (or two) too far. Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to the series, and people are still talking about the original films. Morris seems to recognize that, and in the same interview acknowledged that the third film beautifully wrapped up the story.
While we’re relieved there are no plans to extend the story that makes up the Toy Story trilogy, this news is kind of a mixed bag. Pixar films rarely disappoint, and chances are the latest Toy Story will be just as imaginative and enjoyable as the previous three. But Toy Story is such a huge part of our childhoods, and the thought of a movie coming out with the same name but a totally different story is a little strange.
Of course, plans are still being finalized, so things could still change between now and the release date. Nothing is set in stone, something Morris points out in the interview. At least for now it sounds like Woody and Buzz will be left on the shelf, and the story we saw come to a conclusion in Toy Story 3 will remain intact.
