Listen up: Tove Styrke is our fave new musical artist on the rise

If you haven’t heard about Swedish newcomer Tove Styrke, take this as an opportunity to indulge your senses . . . just don’t confuse her with Tove Lo (of “Habits [Stay High]” fame, there is more than one Tove on this Earth).

After finishing third on Swedish Idol in 2009, the 22-year-old singer/songwriter dropped a solid, six track EP last November called Borderline. Described by TIME as full of “coming-of-age tracks about womanhood and finding your voice,” the EP is a testament to her brewing potential.

Tracks like “Borderline” and “Even If I’m Loud It Doesn’t Mean I’m Talking to You” seem to come directly out of Santigold’s book of reggae-influence, while tracks like “Samurai Boy” have more of a Robyn-meets-Lykke Li effect. With musical inspiration from all over the map, her versatility is almost incalculable . . . which is pretty damn exciting.

With her sophomore album Kiddo already on the horizon, we can now indulge in some of her newer work. Unlike the tracks on riot-worthy Borderline EP, her forthcoming album seems to literally be singing a different tune.

Her first single, “Ego,” is already making noticeable ripples in the water. With its effortless beat, infectious chorus and breathy vocals, “Ego” is as sensual as it is groovy. The video, which premiered on TIME today, takes a scenic route with Styrke around Tokyo, Japan. Anyone else catching a Grimes “Oblivion” vibe from this video?

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for her album Kiddo, due this spring. In the meantime, we’ll be waiting in agonized anticipation . . . and listening to “Ego” on the regular.
