Topshop sold transparent vinyl jeans, and, yes, they know they’re ridiculous

Fashion is a funny thing. There’s such a fine line between what is ridiculously cool, and what’s just plain ridiculous. That being said, the Topshop clear plastic jeans are pretty out there. Especially for $100!

We know that there really aren’t any rules in fashion. The second something is declared too crazy or out of date, it’s back on the runway anyway. So the truth is fashion is subjective, and we’ve got to  form our own opinions. Life is a journey and you’re the master of your own destiny.

But no one really wears these, right?

Except the models who are paid to wear them, and it’s okay. We totally get it. Work is work, and when you’re a model, you’ve got to model. But no real, everyday person actually wears clear plastic jeans, right?

While it might seem mean to be ragging on Topshop, it turns out they’re totally in on the joke! According to an interview in Cosmopolitan, Topshop’s head of design Mo Riach loves all the talk about the clear plastic jeans. If you feel like you’ve heard her name before, it’s because she’s the woman behind Topshop’s other denim hits, the jeans with plastic knees and the jeans with a tulle skirt.

When asked about the surprised responses to the plastic jeans, Riach responded this way:

"We want to disrupt. We want to do something that will get people talking. It's a positive thing. Debate and discussion is a positive thing, and we have our customers coming to our site as a result of that."

It seems that Topshop is subscribing to the “any publicity is good publicity” mantra that we’ve seen so much in 2017. While it might sound weird, she’s totally right! We are talking about her jeans right now, and they are getting Topshop a ton of attention.

In the interview, Riach goes on to cite inspiration from vintage fashion, runway shows, and punk style for her creations.

While these are all amazing sources of fashion inspiration, we can’t help but pause. We’re not sure we’re totally sold (especially for $100)! So what do you think? Would you ever buy or wear a pair of clear plastic jeans? Or jeans with cutout windows? Or jeans with a skirt over them? Topshop certainly thinks you will, but that’s up for us, the consumers to decide!
