America’s dad Tom Hanks brought drinks to his table during the 2018 Golden Globes, because he cares
If you were preoccupied with our current president’s unconventional use of Twitter on Sunday night, you might have missed the 2018 Golden Globes. It was the official start of award’s season, and most of Hollywood was out in full force. Including (perhaps unsurprisingly), one Tom Hanks, who brought drinks to his table during the ceremony, because he really is the dad America needs right now.
Hanks was there for his new release The Post. While he went home empty handed — the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture: Drama went to Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour — Hanks still completely stole our hearts, as usual. While Sunday night’s events were certainly newsworthy in so many ways, Hanks played a more subtle role in making people happy. He brought the drinks, y’all. And not just for himself, oh no. Hanks reportedly headed to the bar during the first commercial break and got drinks for everyone at his table, including a little-known indie director by the name of Steven Spielberg.
And let’s just say, Twitter definitely approved.

Of course, Sunday night was about so much more than the typical pomp and glamor of Hollywood. Almost everyone attending the Golden Globes wore black to protest the imbalance of power between men and women in the entertainment industry that leads to sexual assault. Red carpet interviews were about more than what stars wore. The night was about justice, equality, and women coming together to take a stand. Including Hanks, who also made headlines Sunday night for being a pretty ideal vice president candidate.
According to People, the event’s host, Seth Meyers, joked that he might have been responsible for Donald Trump deciding to run for president. “In 2011 I told some jokes about our current president at the White House Correspondents Dinner — jokes about how he was unqualified to be president, and some say that night convinced him to run,” Meyers explained to the crowd. So Meyers then attempted some jokes about two audience members who would clearly make a pretty great ticket.
Meyers told Oprah that she did “not have what it takes to be president,” and then moved to Hanks, shouting at him,“You will never be Vice President! You are too mean and unrelatable.”
Well, here’s hoping that Meyers’ joke did its job and that we’ll start seeing “Oprah/Hanks 2020” signs popping up in Hollywood and beyond.
