Tom Cruise just revealed the official name of the “Top Gun” sequel
With rumors buzzing for years about a Top Gun sequel, we must admit we never thought it would actually happen. But now it is definitely happening, and even sooner than we thought. How do we know? Well, Tom Cruise just revealed the title of Top Gun the sequel, and it’s not as obvious as you might think.
Though he’s currently busy promoting The Mummy reboot, Cruise took time out to confirm that the sequel is definitely happening, and is giving fans so many good tidbits about what to expect when Maverick returns to the big screen.
The actor revealed that the movie will NOT be called Top Gun 2, and the reason why makes perfect sense.

Cruise chatted with Access Hollywood this week, saying,
He said, "It's not going to be called Top Gun 2. It's going to be called Top Gun: Maverick. I didn't want a number. You don't need a number."
He’s totally right — a sequel to one of the most iconic ’80s movies ever simply doesn’t need a number. Cruise also revealed that some of the 1986 classic’s most beloved elements will be there, saying, “we’re going to have the same tone that we had from the first. Stylistically, it’s going to be the same. It will have the same score…I can tell you that. Aviators are back, you know, the need for speed, we’re going to have big, fast machines.”

But will he step back into Maverick’s iconic pilot outfit? Turns out, he will! “I’m a pilot, it’s going to be a competition film like the first one…it’s going to be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one, but a progression for Maverick.”
Cruise is “very excited” to work on the long-awaited sequel, adding, “It’s a great challenge.”
We’ll just patiently wait for more info while we play “Take My Breath Away” on repeat.
