Watch the exact moment Tom Cruise broke his ankle on “Mission: Impossible” — and warning, it is not for the faint of heart

There’s been a lot of buzz around the sixth Mission: Impossible film. The official title was just released released, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, by  Tom Cruise himself, and the actor also shared pictures on his (new) Instagram of some big stunts from the film. Because Cruise does a lot of his own stunts, it usually means he ends up doing crazy stuff like hanging off the side of a mountain and hitching a ride to the side of a plane as it takes off. You know, casual.

Unfortunately, things took a bad turn in the process of filming a jump from one building to another for the upcoming Mission: Impossible, and Cruise massively broke his ankle.

The stunt was, for Cruise anyway, a fairly low-key one. Don’t get us wrong — it’d be a HUGE deal for us, but considering some of the other stuff he’s pulled off, this doesn’t break the top 5 of the craziest things he’s done for this franchise. Essentially, Cruise had to sprint full-out on the top of the building, jump off the side of that building, and catch himself on the ledge of a building across from where he jumped.

But when Cruise jumped, he smacked ankle-first into the second building. Now, because Mission: Impossible is a big-budget movie, the jump was shot from several different angles. So when Cruise and some of the movie’s cast showed up at The Graham Norton Show to promote the film, they showed the various angles to the audience.

If you’re squeamish, consider this warning that one such angle explicitly shows Tom Cruise’s ankle break.

However, they show other, more innocuous angles first, and they warn you heavily before they show the graphic one. (Cruise’s co-star Simon Pegg says that he’s repeatedly refused to watch it, and we TOTALLY get it). Watch it, if you dare…

Hearing the story of the break, watching Cruise pull himself up from the side of the building and run off camera (with a broken ankle) to complete the shot, and learning that he’s still shooting with a broken ankle is seriously impressive. We’re glad Tom Cruise is on the mend, and though some of us surely couldn’t bring ourselves to watch the ankle break shot, we can’t wait to see Mission: Impossible – Fallout when it’s released this July.
