If you want TLC’s next album (and we do), better head on over to Kickstarter

2015 is officially the year of the comeback album (and don’t say we didn’t tell you!). The latest rad and retro music news: legendary girl group TLC is setting up shop to record their fifth and final album (their first album in nearly a decade) . . . and they’re funding this epic endeavor via Kickstarter. (We know, breath.)That means no record labels, no corporate funding . . . just support from the fans, which TLC feels, “is the natural next step in response to the current state of the music industry.” Right on.

Though the ladies have been largely off-the-radar, timeless hits like “No Scrubs” and “Waterfalls” have kept fans (like us!) fiercely loyal through the years. In fact, their fans are one of the main reasons they opted to go the Kickstarter route. In an interview with Billboard, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas continually stressed their decision to use Kickstarter as it allow them to, “have complete control.” She spilled a little more saying, “The only people we’ll be talking to and asking their opinion is the fans”.

And just so supporters know they’re appreciated, the Kickstarter campaign comes with a lot of perks for contributors. From overnight onesie parties with T-Boz and Chilli, to TLC-themed night lights, there is no shortage of fan appreciation. And I’m sorry, but let’s just briefly return to the onesie party. How do we get to guarantee that prize?!

Aside from all of those goodies, fans who pledge $5 or more will, “be able to participate in choosing a song that will have a certain type of remix . . . [fans are] really, really going to be involved in helping us make this album,” they said. Let’s give a round of applause for democracy! And for TLC.

Unconventional as it may be, we love that TLC is putting the power back in the hands of their fans. Not to mention, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for this album. Anyone else wanna pledge to maintain those ’90s feels?

The girls will be recording the album as a duo (their first time doing that) but always keeping Lisa’s spirit in their hearts, just as she is in ours.. As their Kickstarter page says, “This final album will be the first studio album by the two of us. Of course, Lisa’s spirit will always be present in our music. That will never change.”

By the way, the Kickstarter page went live yesterday, and the ladies have already raised over $60,000. They still need about $90,000 more by February 19 to make their goal. No pressure.

Oh and here’s their Kickstarter video. It’s pretty awesome. Don’t go chasin’ waterfalls, but DO go chasin’ new TLC albums. Just sayin’.
