The lead single from TLC’s first album in 15 years is here, and ’90s kids will not be disappointed
If you’re a child of the ’90s, you’re probably familiar with Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, and the late and great Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. If not, get ready to be, because TLC’s new single has dropped, and it is fire.
The legendary R&B group is set to release their as-yet-untitled final album this summer, and the lead track from it, titled “Way Back,” not only conjures up memories of TLC jams past — there’s a version featuring Snoop Dogg.
And if you’re wondering, the lyrics have us nodding our heads like YES LADIES YESSSS, GIRL POWER, ETC. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l9eB58sMVw
In our opinion, the song is more reminiscent of mid-’90s TLC — think “Creep” more so than “No Scrubs”— and we could not dig on that more.
For one, it seems like the ladies are recording for their longtime fans. The rest of the lyrics talk about early love, growing up, etc. — themes so many of us were juuust becoming familiar with during TLC’s early days.
Plus, what song is not made better by the presence of Snoop Dogg?
The upcoming fifth and final (SOB) album from Watkins and Thomas was made possible by fans on Kickstarter, who donated almost half a million dollars to the project. Wow. The ladies also asked fans to help them name the album, and we can’t wait to see what they land on.
And while we’re going to miss Lopes’ smooth rap bridges like whoa, we’re low-key stoked the other group members see no need in replacing her on the new album.
In fact, they have made it clear in the past that no one can replace Left Eye, even using her recorded vocals during live performances — like when they toured in 2015 alongside New Kids on the Block and Nelly, and this writer may have cried her eyes out when Watkins and Thomas made a tribute to their late friend and partner.
June 30 can’t come soon enough. Until then, we’ll survive with “Way Back” on repeat, with a little bit of CrazySexyCool and Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip mixed in for good measure. Oh, and hopefully photos and the music video, which is filming this month!
