Why I’m building a tiny house on wheels

About nine months ago I started planning my tiny house on wheels. I had just moved to Colorado and after watching the ‘Tiny’ documentary on Netflix, I knew it was the life for me. Then a few weeks ago, I attended the first ever Tiny House Jamboree. It. Was. Epic. Over 40,000 people from all 50 states and even 10 countries came together to learn, and see and experience these tiny houses. It was a collective community cultivated from a desire or curiosity surrounding all that is “tiny.” Some people had already built their homes, some were just about to, and others were just there for fun. But in a world that doesn’t fully understand or accept this hugely tiny new movement, it was so comforting to know that they’re were thousands of others in this world, just like me. So here are the reasons why I am going to build a tiny house on wheels. No more moving I have moved over 20 times. From place to place, packing all of my sh*t into tiny car after tiny car. AND I AM OVER IT. OH. VER. IT. I am mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted from moving from temporary home to temporary home and I just can’t even anymore. No more renting Seriously. After eight years of basically just throwing money down the drain for rent in various dorms and apartments and houses, I simply can’t justify continuing the pattern. It would be different if I lived in one place for more than a year—heck, even one state—but that’s just not the case for this on-the-go dreamer. I don’t want to buy a stationary house You mean do something like, adulting? Hard pass. Where would I buy said house? And how? And why? Settling is not a word in my vocabulary. I love the open road I have traveled thousands of miles all by myself (#lonewolf) and feel most at home on the open road. So why not make my home on the open road? I can park it where I want, when I want, for how long I want (depending on the rules) and just go from place to place. I won’t have to worry about a roommate Not to get all selfish here, but I want my own home. All for me. Roommates are great, and living with other people is a journey, but as much as I love my friends and connecting with others, I need my own space. A place to unwind and be me and keep my sanity. Tiny homes are so, so cute Look, I know that what you see isn’t always what you get, but come on! They are picturesque and idyllic and they just scream F R E E D O M. Granted, I don’t really understand how it all works (like seriously how do you wash your clothes and what about all the glasses and where does your mail go) but it seems like a dream come true. Like a fairy tale. And Disney never lies, right Disney? It seems like a great way to develop all the DIY skills I don’t know the first thing about building this thing (I mean just a few days ago I used a drill but it was to get a cork out of a wine bottle and as you can imagine, that failed) and I don’t have the slightest idea how I’m actually going to make this work or how I’m gonna pull it or really any of the logistics down, but since when has not knowing everything about something meant you shouldn’t just go for it? Isn’t that even more of a reason to try it? There was a time, many moons ago, when I didn’t know how to walk or talk and now look at me–I can walk AND talk. There was a time when I didn’t know how to drive or how to play a G chord or how to french braid and now I can do them all. Besides that last one actually. Braiding is hard. My gut says so Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut. And this just feels right to me. It’s the only thing that makes sense to me and the lifestyle I desire. It’s about more than just a house, it’s about a home. My home. So whether you’re building a tiny home or thinking of dying your hair pink or working on your first book; just go for it. Listen to your gut, and if it scares you, then maybe that’s a sign that it’s worth giving a try. If it doesn’t work out, I tell ya what, I won’t be any less proud of you. In fact I’ll be more proud of you for putting in the effort. And if does work out, than first round’s on me! Coral Country (yes, like the reef) has big dreams, and is a natural ginger. She is pro beer, bonfires and blogging. She also collects sweatshirts from states she’s never been to. [image via author]
