Aw, Tinder got a little defensive on Twitter
So, to catch everyone up to speed, last week Vanity Fair published a piece entitled “Tinder and the Dawn of the ‘Dating Apocalypse,’” written by Nancy Jo Sales. In the pieces, Sales takes a dim view of the app’s ability to matchmake real relationships, instead assigning the app special significance in today’s “hookup culture.” The article pulled out a stat that suggested that 30% of Tinder users are married and are using Tinder’s technology to cheat on their spouses. That’s when Tinder stepped in to set the record straight and clear their name.
Then Tinder got a zinger in . . .
And THEN things got heartfelt:
Tinder went on to cite examples of these meaningful searches and connections:
Speaking of swipes, shortly after Tinder gave this stirring Twitter speech, it returned to taking shots at the Vanity Fair writer and her article:
So, Tinder took a total of 31 tweets to respond to Vanity Fair. Which, if you’re at all familiar with Twitter, is A LOT OF TWEETS. Especially for a hugely successful company, that should kind of be used to criticism at this point. That’s part of the package deal you sign up for when you become, you know, a hugely successful company. It’s a little wild to see an entity this huge pulling out the big guns on social media to address an article that, real talk, everyone would have forgotten about or never even known about in the first place if Tinder had just kept its chill.
That said, Tinder totally acknowledges that it may have gotten a touch too feisty on social yesterday, and so later that same day, the company issued a statement:
“We have a passionate team that truly believes in Tinder. While reading a recent Vanity Fair article about today’s dating culture, we were saddened to see that the article didn’t touch upon the positive experiences that the majority of our users encounter daily,” a rep told Gawker. “Our intention was to highlight the many statistics and amazing stories that are sometimes left unpublished, and, in doing so, we overreacted.”
Totally get it Tinder, we’ve been there.
Tinder just launched a new, super-exclusive app (and Emma Watson is on it)
