Tinashe has spoken out against sexism and colorism in the music industry, and we are listening

Rising singer, dancer, actor, and artiste Tinashe has opened up about the sexism and colorism in the music industry, and we are totally listening to what she has to say.

The singer — who released her latest single, “Flame,” earlier this year (which led people to think that she literally set her record label on fire) — sat down with The Guardian and got pretty candid about her experiences in the music industry.

Tinashe talked about how, after announcing her second album, Joyride — an album that, 18 months later, is still to be released — she had to reassess the journey that she was on. However, she said that she wouldn’t be held down.

“However long it takes, I know I will get to my end goal. I’m never going to stop. I will make music forever,” she said.

The singer also chatted about the sexism she has encountered along her career path. Tinashe is not just a singer, but also a producer, and she said that she has come up against difficulties in a male-dominated industry.

“As far as female producers or female engineers…when you’re in these studios, it’s all men,” she said. “It is so rare that they’d not even expect me to have an opinion.”

This, she said, is also compounded in “stan wars” on Twitter, that see fanbases pit artists (mainly female) against each other.

“There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyoncé or Rihanna,” she added. “It’s very, very strange.”

Indeed, Tinashe went on to express the “colorism involved in the black community, which is very apparent.”

"It’s about trying to find a balance where I’m a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don’t fully fit into the black community; they don’t fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman," she told The Guardian. "That disconnect is confusing sometimes...I am what I am.

Elsewhere, Tinashe confirmed that work on her anticipated second album was still underway, and she revealed that she planned to release the collection before the end of the year.
