We can’t stop watching celebrities do the TikTok Safe Hands Challenge
If you thought TikTok was just the name of a classic Kesha song before you started self-quarantining, we’re guessing that now you know it’s much more than that. The video-sharing app that was the object of teenagers’ obsession for months is practically everyone’s obsession now. With all of this extra time at home due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, people are turning to TikTok to learn dances, lip-sync, and create hilarious videos that are going viral within hours of being posted on the app. Our current favorites? Celebrities doing the TikTok Safe Hands Challenge.
Aside from humorous videos, people are also using the social platform to spread awareness and positive messages relating to the coronavirus pandemic. Enter: the Safe Hands Challenge. Users film themselves washing their hands for 20 seconds, and they encourage others to do the same—all in the name of combating coronavirus.
Celebrities are joining in on this challenge and scrubbing their hands while singing, dancing, and generally cracking us up. There are cameos from celeb kids and pets, and we get a glimpse into their homes, which is always exciting. Watch the full video of celebs doing the Safe Hands challenge above, and see their individual performances below.

Can anyone beat Kristin Chenoweth’s soprano? The Broadway star’s pipes are so pretty to listen to while she does the Safe Hands Challenge. And the high-stakes instrumentals of this song are the perfect way to count down until you’ve washed long enough. Plus, the opening shot where the infamously short singer steps onto a stool in front of the sink so she can reach the faucet is truly hilarious.
Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey and her kids singing along to “Ol’ Dirty Bastard” is the video we needed to smile big today. Her kids know the lyrics to the song pretty well, and they’re super excited to be washing their hands. We want everyone’s energy level to be equal to theirs while scrubbing hands from here on out.
Olivia Wilde
The award for “Most Fun Hand-Washer” goes to Olivia Wilde. The actress accepted Selena Gomez’s nomination to do the Safe Hands Challenge, and she gave some helpful tips while she washed. Wilde played a doctor on the Fox medical drama House, so she has some professional handwashing training. She relayed helpful tips from surgeons—like remembering to thoroughly clean your thumbs and nails—all while dancing to no music. It’s a mood.
Jimmy Fallon and his daughters
Jimmy Fallon’s daughters are flat-out adorable, and they seem to love their dad’s original handwashing song. Plus, is it just us, or does Fallon have a Bob Dylan vibe going on? We’re loving the guitar and raspy voice. Jimmy: More singing videos, please!
Gloria Gaynor
Could there be a more perfect song to sing while washing your hands than Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”? Watching the disco queen herself scrub while dancing to her smash hit is everything we need right now. Prepare to have this song stuck in your head all day long.
Terry Crews
We’re keeping this video on file for when we’re feeling down in the dumps. Terry Crews’s rendition of “I Will Survive” is the energy we all need to channel when we’re lacking motivation. Crews’s intensity is contagious, and he’s scrubbing those hands like nobody’s business.
Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman gave us a little glimpse into his grand, marble bathroom (which, we’re guessing, might include a giant tub we could spend some serious time in). There, he reminded us of the importance of turning off the faucet while you’re scrubbing your hands—because he neglected to do so in his first take of the video. Hey, we all make mistakes.
Follow celebrities’ leads and do the TikTok Safe Hands Challenge yourself. You never know—your version might go viral.
