Finally, a company is making amazing tights for curvy women of color

There is no better time of year for pairing tights and dresses than fall/winter. The look is sophisticated, but keeps you warm at the same time.

The problem is, however, that women of color have very few options when it comes to nude tights, or tights that match their skin tone. If you pop into a drugstore to get a replacement pair, you’ll likely find tights and pantyhose for Caucasian women and not for a Latina or black woman on the go.

Enter Nubian Skin, a two-year-old company that has made it its mission to create comfortable and attractive nude tights for women of color. The company’s products have been well-reviewed and even picked up by big name retailers like Nordstrom and ASOS. But it wasn’t until this week that Nubian Skin decided to create tights perfect for another minority among women: Curvy ladies.

The company debuted a new line of nude tights aptly named Curve, which come in a variety of skin tones, including Cinnamon and Berry, and meet the needs of curvy women. Each pair features an anti-chafing panel (perfect for the woman whose thighs rub together—which is most of us) and a no-roll waistband that will save wearers the embarrassment of adjusting their tights in the most inconvenient places (i.e. on the subway). The tights come in sizes XL, 2XL, and 3XL.

Nubian Skin joins a larger movement to make products and even words more inclusive when it comes to the definition of “nude.” Back in September, one college student successfully lobbied the people behind the Merriam-Webster dictionary to change the definition of “nude” from “having the color of a white person’s skin” to “having a color (as pale beige or tan) that matches the wearer’s skin tones or giving the appearance of nudity.”

The lesson? Even the smallest change can make a world of difference for people who don’t quite fit our standard definitions.
