Tiffany’s newest ad features a real-life same-sex couple, and it’s beautiful
Oh Tiffany’s. You and your dainty blue boxes and bags, your unattainable diamonds glistening behind impenetrable, dreamy glass countertops. The brand, which is so traditionally entrenched with idealistic, cookie-cutter love, hasn’t ventured outside of its heteronormative depictions of relationships —until now. For the first time ever, Tiffany & Co. has chosen a real-life homosexual couple to represent their forthcoming engagement ring campaign, titled “Will You,” which “honors the idea that love knows no boundaries.” And it’s wonderful. These two gorgeous men aren’t even models —they’re just a regular (read: insanely beautiful) couple living in New York.
When promoting engagement rings, most jewelers unfortunately use a man and a woman to symbolize ever-lasting love bound by rings. But all kinds of couples exist, and to strictly use a heterosexual couple for every single engagement ring ad is neglectful and misguided. Linda Buckley, Tiffany’s VP of North America, told ELLE.com, “Nowadays, the road to marriage is no longer linear, and true love can happen more than once with love stories coming in a variety of forms. The Tiffany engagement ring is the first sentence of the story that a couple will write together as they create a life that is deeply intimate and exceptional, which is the message we hope to convey through this campaign.”
The fact that Tiffany & Co. (one of the most iconic and well-known brands in the world), chose to use a same-sex couple for their ad campaign is a powerful, and much-needed statement: Couples of all kinds exist, and their love is real. We hope that this is just the beginning, and that more and more companies will represent same-sex relationships and marriages. The LGBTQ community is still vastly underrepresented, but it’s awesome to see such a monumental brand take a positive step in a very, very right direction.
