Thought you had a crush on Matt McGorry before? Well his wage gap stance is about to make that crush much bigger
If you’re not familiar with actor Matt McGorry, you should be! In addition to playing Asher on How To Get Away With Murder, he also plays adorable prison guard John Bennett on Orange Is The New Black. Playing two of our fave male characters on TV is not the only reason to love him. He’s also been taking to his social media pages lately to express his newfound views on feminism, gender equality, and the so-called “wage gap myth.”
Matt admits he’s a relative newbie in “the fight for gender equality,” but he doesn’t want to let that stop him from expressing his beliefs. After Tuesday (National Equal Pay Day), Matt posted a long blog on Facebook about the pay gap, specifically addressing those who believe that women making 78 cents to every man’s dollar on a paycheck is an outdated concept. Here’s an excerpt from his post:
This isn’t the first time Matt’s dropped some truth about gender equality. Last month, he firmly came out on the side of feminism in a blog post, during which he admitted he’d been in the dark about a lot of things when it came to what the term truly means.
“I’m embarrassed to admit that I only recently discovered the ACTUAL definition of ‘feminism’,” he wrote. “The fact that the term is sometimes clouded with anything other than pure support and positivity in our society is very tragic. I believe in gender equality. Being a feminist is for both women AND men. I AM A FEMINIST.”
Matt has also cited Emma Watson’s #HeForShe movement as well as Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, as further inspiration for why he now considers himself a proud feminist. “All men and women would benefit from reading the book,” he said in a post on Facebook.
In terms of men we’re in sincere admiration of this week, this guy definitely takes a big piece of the cake.
