Here’s who plays Korg in “Thor: Ragnarok,” because we know you’re wondering
The latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Ragnarok, features wonderful newcomers (to the franchise) and characters: For starters, there’s Cate Blanchett as Hela, the Goddess of Death; Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, who oversees the Contest of Champions; and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, a ferocious warrior.
And warning, some Thor: Ragnarok spoilers follow. But you could probably gather most of this from the trailers…
ANYWAY, there’s also the warmhearted, wisecracking Korg, a rock creature whom Thor encounters when he’s captured by the Grandmaster and is forced to participate in his gladiator-style battle. Korg is, for sure, a scene stealer, but you might be wondering…who plays him?
Well, none other than Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi!
You know, *this* guy.
Okay, fine. Here’s a more serious photo for good measure…
Waititi played Korg in motion capture, and apparently thought up the character early on in the filming process.
“A lot of that grew just because we had such a good relationship, Chis Hemsworth told Entertainment Weekly of Thor and Korg's funnier moments. “[Taika] would be sort of riffing in that character just for our entertainment on set. "A few times I begged him to do that on camera. That speaks to the mystery and talent of Taika: to be directing this huge film and then to pull out a character that quite possibly steals the movie.
For Waititi’s part, he’s *very* modest about the character’s success.
“It’s not my fault that [Korg’s] probably the greatest character in the film and will probably get a spinoff,” he quipped. And honestly, we’d be into that.
But while we wait for word about a Korg spinoff…Thor: Ragnarok is currently playing in theaters. And there are many reasons why you should see it. If you haven’t seen it yet, add Korg to that list.
