This “Tonight Show” remix of a song from “Hamilton” proves just how talented Busta Rhymes and Joell Ortiz really are
Thanks to The Hamilton Mixtape, our Hamilton fever is still going strong. That’s why we’re thrilled that during last night’s episode, The Tonight Show covered “My Shot” from Hamilton, using the talented Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz, and The Roots.
This song, featured on the remix, is one of the four songs that The Roots worked on, and having two of their three collaborators on set was pretty magical. (Unfortunately, Nate Ruess, who also helped with the track, wasn’t available.)
As expected, “My Shot” is as magical performed on the set of The Tonight Show as it is on the theater stage.

Pretty phenomenal, isn’t it? We know you’ve had the Hamilton soundtrack on repeat for some time, but this live version will definitely be getting multiple plays today.
According to Lin-Manuel Miranda, having Questlove help with The Hamilton Mixtape was all part of the plan — as a college student, he, himself, was a huge fan of the Roots.
"The Roots played my Spring Fling senior year at [Wesleyan] college, and I was a huge fan of the Roots’ albums," Miranda said in an interview with Vanity Fair.
Of course, The Roots weren’t the only musicians to jump in on the project.
"People are coming out of the woodwork, knocking on the door. Half the songs are cover versions of songs in the show, and the others are interpolations—we’ll take some of this, some of that, and make something new out of it," Questlove said.
Kelly Clarkson, Ben Folds, Nas, and Ja Rule are just a few of the artists that appear on the Mixtape. And, based on what we all just saw with “My Shot,” it’s safe to say that it’s truly an album worth buying ASAP.
