So THIS is why Bella Hadid never smiles in photos

You may have noticed that Bella Hadid has perfected her runway face. She’s looked fierce for Alexander Wangwalked (and cried during) a Prabal Gurung fashion show, and of course, walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. And have you noticed that she actually looks a LOT like a young Gisele Bündchen? But despite her impressive runway resume, Hadid is rarely photographed smiling. Though it is easy to assume why, there is more to the story than you might think.

Recently, Bella Hadid opened up about her insecurities and why she doesn’t like to smile in photos.

The model told The Guardian that she doesn’t smile often because she feels awkward doing so. And honestly, we can relate. Being “on,” particularly on demand, is kind of tough. So some of us just never smile.

"I feel uncomfortable, sometimes, smiling in front of the camera. It actually took me until probably this year to really understand my face."

Hadid went on to explain that people are often surprised that she is nicer in person than they expected her to be.

"People meet me sometimes and say: 'You’re so different to what I expected.' People always tell me I seem mean or intimidating on social media. But I really love engaging with new people."

It is hard to be constantly in the spotlight like Hadid often is. Being expected to smile on camera, look flawless from every angle, and be kind to strangers regularly is a lot to ask of one person. We have never assumed Hadid was cold IRL, and we appreciate her clearing the air for anyone who has.

Remember, not everything is always as it seems!

Just like any other 20-something, Hadid has her own insecurities. Growing up with a famous model for a mother — and a smiley famous model sister Gigi — is a unique experience.

Hadid is naturally gorgeous no matter what expression she wears. We are so happy she found her career path at a young age. Still, a lot of expectation comes with being famous so young.

We totally support Hadid feeling comfortable. If she wants to smile, that’s great. If she wants to perfect her smoldering model expression, that’s great too.

Regardless, we appreciate her speaking up. We all have insecurities, and being open about them is the first step to overcoming.

We love you, Bella.
