Here’s what it would be like if “Sex and the City” had social media

Recently, I decided to revisit seasons 1-6 of one of my all-time favorite comfort food TV shows, Sex and the City. Rewatching the episodes was like returning back to the early 2000s when I first started in with Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte’s adventures as four single gals living in New York City. I also became painfully aware of how much time had passed since the show, and its two follow up films, had ended. There was no social media or smartphones. All four of the women had landlines. Barely anybody sent emails, nobody texted, and apps didn’t exist — not even in the movies which were in released in 2008 and 2010.

After my rewatching binge and knowing that there’s a likely a third movie on the way, I got into my Carrie Bradshaw voiceover state of mind and I wondered what the foursome in 2016 would be like if they all had social media accounts.

Carrie

Of the four women, Carrie would be the toughest to pin down with a social media presence. Despite all of her books being bestsellers in the show, she was always visibly nervous with all things related to email and the internet. By now, one can only hope she would have stopped hiding under her desk when sending an email and she has a fully established social media presence, complete with a blog and accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, all with huge numbers of followers. She also most likely has her own social media intern along with several freelance side-hustles, and she workshops all her upcoming listicles in-depth to the girls at the coffee shop. (She might have considered her Season 5 articles about “men as socks” and “the search for the perfect French fry” to be silly, but hey, those are the kinds of posts proven to cinch clicks.)

She still shops for her Manolos, btw, but she takes Ubers instead of cabs, and on Sunday nights, Carrie stays in with Seamless takeout, binge-watching “Girls”— which makes her (somewhat) nostalgic for her early twenties dating life in NYC.

Samantha

You would think that Samantha’s use of the internet would be fairly obvious here — she might be an avid user of dating sites like Tinder and Bumble as the resident single lady of the clique — but let’s dig deeper than what’s on the surface.

As a PR professional, Samantha would be a thought leader on all things related to public relations tactics, marketing techniques, and career tips. She would have her own syndicated columns on Forbes Women. Along with a stack of print magazines (never underestimate the power of print media!), Ms. Jones most likely keeps a well-worn copy of #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amorusa on her immaculate and Instagram-ready desk at all times. And speaking of Instagram, Samantha would be a tagged regular in photos with Kim K., Anna Wintour, and Oprah — all photos she would share with hilarious behind the scenes stories with the girls at the coffee shop.

Miranda

As a married mom with a hectic career and a life that’s always on the go, Miranda would be glued to her iPhone in any spare minute she had, utilizing her time as wisely as possible to stay updated. Putting together a grocery list with Evernote, reading theSkimm and Politico on her morning commute into the city from Brooklyn, and tweeting her thoughtful snark on everything from the election to Leo’s Oscar win. She would talk to the other women about Super Tuesday updates, her thoughts on Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In,” and news about Brady and the over-the-top antics of the room moms at his grade school.

Occasionally, she would let it slip that she is definitely binge-watching, and live-tweeting, this season of The Bachelorette.

Charlotte

Undoubtedly, this Park Avenue princess would have an incredible lifestyle blog devoted to her thoughts on marriage, motherhood, style, and interior decor as seen on the Upper East Side. Her professional, yet tasteful photos from her world would all be showcased on Instagram, earning thousands of “likes” within seconds.

At the coffee shop, Charlotte would most likely be seen with her iPad in her lap, sharing news about Kate Middleton’s latest ensemble while pinning photos of Kate’s latest looks to one of the boards on her carefully curated Pinterest account. Charlotte is still mourning the end of Downton Abbey, but is still about the Masterpiece Classic life on PBS.
