William will be in “This Is Us” Season 2 as a GHOST, and our hearts already can’t handle it
Get your tissues at the ready, This Is Us fans. Series creator Dan Fogelman just revealed that William, who passed away in last season’s heartwrenching episode “Memphis,” will be making a major return to the show — in a seriously sad and kind of spooky way.
Yup, the character (played by Ron Cephas Jones) will appear as a ghost in Season 2, much like when Jack appeared to Randall as a hallucination.
"There might be a conversation that a character might have with [William], imagining he’s there, Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly.
Really feeling all of the emotions right now.
We’ll also get the chance to see some flashbacks of William, and delve much deeper into his life.
“We’re going to go into his previous stories — things we didn’t know about him and didn’t see — so very much the way that Jack lives in the show, even though we know he’s already gone, is very much the way that William can,” Fogelman said.
This is all SO exciting (and incredibly bittersweet) for us as viewers, but it’s even more of a treat for Jones, who thought the book might have been closed on his character. Though, he was “thinking and hoping and praying” that that wasn’t the case.
"They’ve been so creative over there, the writers and Dan have been so ingenious," Jones told Entertainment Weekly. "There’s no telling what he’s been cooking up in the lab this time around, you know? But I imagine and I’m sure it’s going to be more of that and even better, so I’m excited about it.
Annnd we bet Sterling K. Brown is equally as excited to have his TV dad back with him. The actor took to Twitter last month after nabbing an Emmy nod for This Is Us, and posted this emotional drawing of Randall and his two dads.

Needless to say, we can’t wait to see the two of them reunited for This Is Us Season 2 — even if it’s at the risk of so, so much more sobbing on our parts.
