Milo Ventimiglia is ready for Jack’s death on “This Is Us” — too bad we will never feel the same
Sit tight, This Is Us fans. Now that the second half of Season 2 has kicked off, we’re getting closer and closer to the moment we’ve been dreading the most — Jack Pearson’s death. Although his impending doom has been laid out from the start, nothing will make us ready for when it actually plays out on screen, not to mention the period of grief we’ll inevitably go through afterwards. Apparently, Milo Ventimiglia feels the exact opposite, as he’s already made peace with his character’s demise.
How, Milo, how?! Teach us your ways.
In an interview with HuffPost, the star shared his two cents on Jack’s passing, and his feelings about it.
“We all know that Jack’s dying soon, so I think as an audience that’s a hard pill to swallow. To know that this man who has such influence over his family ― over his wife and his kids ― is at a certain point going to cease to be and those experiences are going to be the only things they’re going to have to look back on to move forward in their lives. So I’ve come to terms. I’ve come to terms with Jack and I’m prepared for his death.
“[Showrunner] Dan Fogelman and I talk about it quite a bit,” he continued. “I don’t think anyone is going to be really prepared for it. It’s going to crush people.”
Oh, it’s going to crush people, alright.
And while he’s fully aware that of his character’s fate on This Is Us, Milo shares how rewarding it is to play such a celebrated figure.
“I think Jack is a fun-loving dad who gives his family everything. It’s been very satisfying and very rewarding to play that,” he said. “But it’s about how the man lived, it’s not about the footnote of his death or that one chapter of his death. The title page of his death is all about how the man lived.”
Those are some nice words, but nothing will make us feel prepared for Jack’s imminent downfall. In the meantime, we’ll all be sitting here glued to our screens with boxes upon boxes of tissue at hand.
