This fun tool translates human words to something elephants will understand

Ever wish that you could talk to the animals? Well, now you might be able to. An online tool called Hello in Elephant translates human speech into something elephants will be able to recognize. Now, all you need to do is find an elephant nearby to test it on.

The project, created by David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, was created for all of the best reasons. First and foremost, it’s being used to raise awareness towards African elephants. Many African elephants are in risk of becoming endangered based on humans harvesting their tusks. Yes — while illegal, it’s still happening.

The translator was also created in hopes of raising donations. Since the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the biggest orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation centers worldwide, we figure they know what they’re doing.

After studying elephant language for decades, it turns out that the way they communicate isn’t all that different from how humans communicate. Who knew we had so much in common with them?

You can use the translator yourself on the Hello in Elephant website. As emojis are also a key way in which we communicate today, the tool also identifies them and transfers them into elephant-speak. Of course, not every term or phrase you think of will have a translation — but a lot of basic terms (specifically terms you’d assume an elephant might use) are available.

Not only will the website bring added awareness as to how amazing elephants are, but it might just help you appreciate the art of language a little more. While we hate the fact that elephants are threatened, we love the fact that we now have a new way to appreciate them.
