You need this DIY hedgehog pincushion in your life. Trust us.
Sometimes you just need a dose of cute. I know I do, even as a so-called “grown up.” And I’m not going to lie, this week’s DIY falls squarely in the “cute” category. It’s something practical for your crafting life—a pincushion—but in the shape of something extremely whimsical—a hedgehog. The more pins you put into the pincushion, the more quills your hedgehog has. It even has little ears! So buckle up, craft-fans, and get ready to up your daily dose of adorable.
Materials:
- Dark brown felt
- Tan felt
- Tan thread
- Black thread
- Basic sewing needle
- Stuffing
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Straight pins
- Piece of paper
- Ballpoint pen
Craft away:
Fold the paper in half and draw a half-heart, 5 inches long by 2 inches wide. Cut out the shape.
Cut off the tip of the heart, 2 inches in. Unfold the pieces. The larger piece is the template for the hedgehog’s body; the shorter piece is the template for the face.
Draw a half-circle onto the paper, 1 1/4 inches wide. Cut out the shape. This is the template for the ears.
Trace the ear template twice onto the tan felt, and the face template once. Trace the body template once onto the brown fabric. Cut out all of the shapes.
Cut a couple of feet of black thread and fold it in half, then thread the needle and tie a knot.
Stitch two eyes onto the face piece in opposite corners. Stitch a nose onto the tip of the triangle as well.
Pin the face piece onto the body piece with wrong sides touching. With the needle and the tan thread, sew the two pieces together using a whip stitch.
Fold the felt in half with wrong sides touching and pin the edges together. Sew the two sides together with the tan thread, continuing to use a whip stitch. Stop at the edge of the tan felt.
Stuff the pincushion, making it as full as you can. Once the body is filled, you can continue stitching and stuffing until you have reached the front of the pincushion.
Fold the corners of the ear pieces in towards each other. Stitch them to the top of the hedgehog’s head, just behind the edge of the tan fabric.
Fill your hedgehog’s back with pins to make little spines, and enjoy your cute new crafting accessory!
