This bar is donating 100% of its profits to organizations under attack by Trump, and can we get a reservation?
Inspired by today’s political climate, Ravi DeRossi and his partners are hoping to make America great again by undoing some of the damages caused by Donald Trump’s administration. The restaurateur and bar owner is creating change doing what he does best, opening new bars. However, there’s something different about DeRossi’s newest venture: Coup has pledged to donate 100% of its profits to support causes under siege by the current administration.
But how exactly does it all work? With each drink order, customers are given a special wooden token to drop into one of six jars. Each jar is labeled with the name of a cause, such as LGBTQ rights, women’s reproductive rights, or immigration policy reform, and will rotate between 40 great organizations. At the end of each month, the cause with the most tokens will get the next month of proceeds.
Coup, which just opened this week, is located at 64 Cooper Square and is New York’s first 100% not-for-profit bar. The drink menu will feature popular cocktails, mocktails, beers, and wines; DeRossi said the menu was specifically designed to make anyone and everyone feel welcome. Tips are included with the purchase of your drink, but if you’d still like to tip, that money will also be donated to charity.
“Everyone has his or her reasons for not liking the current administration,” DeRossi said in a press announcement.
"For me, it’s manifold, but if I could boil it down to one issue, it would be equality. Regardless of race, color, creed, or sexual orientation, I believe everyone should have an equal and fair chance at life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and it doesn’t seem that this administration adheres to the same philosophy. In fact, it seems as though they are working very hard to create a society of hate and inequality. So, what we’ve created is a cocktail bar that encourages discussion, love, respect, acceptance, and above all, creates a community where we turn our angst and despair into something beautiful and positive.
Coup has combined two of our favorite things, allowing us to take a stand while taking many, many sips. Can we get reservations?
