Things we NEED to see in the ‘Tangled’ TV series
In case you haven’t heard, yesterday The Disney Channel made a major announcement. Tangled, Disney’s super-adorbs 2010 animated, big screen retelling of Rapunzel, will soon be expanded and released as an animated series. Be still our Disney Princess-loving hearts! Seriously, there aren’t enough heart eyes emojis in the world to express our joy over this.
And that’s just the beginning of the awesome news. Mandy Moore took to Twitter yesterday and confirmed that she and Zachary Levi have signed on to voice the parts of Rapunzel and Flynn/Eugene, as they did in the original film.
We loved Mandy as Rapunzel. And Zachary Levi was ultra-charming as a rather Joey Tribbiani-esque (how you doin?) Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert. But you guys, it gets even better. Because the premise of the Tangled television series sounds like a dream come true.
The show will give us a glimpse into the life of the perfectly coifed Rapunzel in between the end of the original 2010 film and her whimsical royal wedding, which takes place in the 2012 animated short, Tangled Ever After. According to Variety, “the series follows the long-locked Rapunzel (Moore), as she acquaints herself with her parents, her kingdom and the people of Corona, and realizes there is much more she needs to learn before she can truly accept her royal destiny, causing her to put her crown and put her marriage on hold to seek out epic adventures.”
Now this is a princess tale we can totally get on board with. Because let’s face it. Marriage isn’t something that should be rushed into, particularly for someone who’s been locked away in a tower for her ENTIRE LIFE. Eighteen years, people. To put things in perspective, that’s three years longer than Netflix darling Kimmy Schmidt was locked away in her underground bunker. So basically, Rapunzel has some serious living to do. All those dreams she sang about? We’re going to see her make them come true.
The bad news? We have a bit of a wait ahead of us. The series won’t debut on The Disney Channel until 2017. I know. I know. Two long years. But that gives us plenty of time to think about all the things we need (and I do mean need) to see when the show finally airs. Things like…
Someone, anyone, cooking something in a frying pan
Eggs. Bacon. Grilled cheese, anyone?
Why? Because we’re just not sure any of the characters from Tangled actually know what a frying pan is for.
The Snuggly Duckling Pub Thugs getting their groove on
These guys are awesome. They can carry a tune, and they’ve got some serious moves. Something tells me they’re just itching to bust out a new song and dance number. Look out, One Direction.
Rapunzel and Flynn/Eugene finally getting to slow dance
The big Kingdom dance scene in Tangled is one of my favorite scenes in the entire movie. The music builds and builds as Rapunzel is passed around from one partner to another, and the whole time we’re just waiting for her to land in Flynn’s arms. She finally does. And then the music comes to an abrupt end. Come on! These two lovebirds deserve their moment.
Rapunzel going shoe shopping
Have you by chance noticed that Rapunzel is the only character in Tangled who is barefoot throughout the duration of the film? Seriously. The only one. Except maybe Pascal, the chameleon. I think even Maximus the horse wears shoes. I get that she’s never felt the grass between her toes and all, but running around barefoot on the Kingdom cobblestones can’t be comfortable.
Some serious hairstyle experimentation
While I adore Rapunzel’s choppy brunette bob, it’s literally the only haircut she’s had in eighteen years. Girlfriend has got some experimenting to do in the hair department. Shake it up, Rapunzel. Maybe try some highlights. Or if you’re really feeling bold, give the new rad split-dyed trend a whirl. At the very least, wind it into a messy ballerina bun.
Rapunzel getting her library card
Or loading up her e-reader. Because for her whole life, the poor thing has been reading the same three books. Over and over and over again. Sometimes even twice a day, which means she’s read those three books more than 13,000 times each. I don’t think there’s a single book I could read that many times, although I might be giving it a shot with Pride & Prejudice. Which begs the question: has Rapunzel even heard of Mr. Darcy?
And most importantly, Rapunzel finally getting a proper bestie
No offense to Pascal. I mean, as chameleons go, he’s beyond adorbs. But Rapunzel has never had a real, honest-to-goodness, twinsies-emoji filled relationship with another female. I, for one, would love to see her find a soul sister before she says “I do” to her soulmate. And it sounds like that’s precisely what Disney has in mind.
Among the cast of characters listed in the Variety article is “newcomer Cassandra, a tough-as-nails handmaiden, who becomes Rapunzel’s confidant.” In other words, she’s got bestie material written all over her. I can totally see Rapunzel teaching Cassandra how to knit. In turn, Cassandra can introduce Rapunzel to important things she’s been missing out on, like Taylor Swift music, Netflix and pizza. Because I doubt anyone delivered to that tower. Just saying.
