These hovering bonsai look like they came straight out of a Miyazaki film
Hoshinchu, a small company based out of Kyushu, Japan, recently launched a Kickstarter for their “Air Bonsai” — which is exactly what it sounds like: bonsai suspended mid-air, hovering two centimeters above the surface of its porcelain pot. Made possible with the use of simple tiny repelling magnets, the exquisite fusion of organic plants and futuristic hovering makes for an otherworldly aesthetic you wouldn’t be surprised to see in Hayao Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky.
According to their Kickstarter page, the Basic DIY kit ($200) consists of a “little star” moss plant base, a porcelain “energy base,” a custom made cushion, and an AC adapter, all packed into a gorgeous kiri box. For $30 more, you can upgrade to a volcanic rock plant base instead of the moss.
The plants themselves are not included in the kits due to restrictions shipping live plants between countries. “[But] to solve this matter,” the team at Hoshinchu explains, “We have support from our team members in the United States who will negotiate with regional bonsai and plant makers.”
Since the plants are not included, there’s nothing really stopping us from transplanting all kinds of tiny plants to create the hovering sci-fi garden of our dreams. Floating cactus garden anyone?
