There’s officially going to be a Chippendales movie, but it’s not at all what you’re probably imagining
If you ever thought, “Hmmm, you know what might be cool? A Chippendales movie!” then your prayers have been answered (and if you’ve literally never thought that, then, well, that’s okay, too). Regardless, a Chippendale’s movie has officially been green lit, and it’s set to star Dev Patel and Ben Stiller.
According to Deadline.com, the film won’t be a Magic Mike-esque romp into the world of male stripping. Instead, it will tell the real-life origin story of how one Bombay-born bar owner (Patel) turned “an LA dive bar into a multimillion-dollar cultural zeitgeist sensation.” Stiller is slated to play the Emmy-winning children’s show producer who recruited the dancers and choreographed all their routines (seriously, you can’t make this stuff up). The real-life partnership ultimately ended in a murder-suicide, and the film aims to explore the “seamy underbelly where entertainment and criminality meet,” as well as the corruption of the American dream.
Sounds heavy.
Deadline also reported that this movie has been 20 years in the making, with a ton of writers and directors attached at various points in time (including both Oliver Stone and Tony Scott).
We’re VERY curious to see how this one turns out — and we’re glad we’ve been warned that it won’t be a light-hearted dance romp for the faint of heart (though Hollywood, if you do want to make a light-hearted dance romp for the faint of heart, we’re totally here for it, just fyi).
Meanwhile, we’ll steel ourselves for the gritty, crime-driven real-life story of the famous male stripper company. And hopefully they’ll at least be some dancing?
